Isabelle Parkinson shares Transgressing borders – writing and writing about writing: a sound and performance piece which involves readings of Stein's "theoretical" texts – her lectures and elucidations – alongside her creative practice.

Isabelle Parkinson: I am in the early stages of a PhD which aims to examine the position of Gertrude Stein's work in relation to debates about the legacy of Modernism. My focus is on the notion that innovation itself - the possibility of rupture and difference – was institutionalised by Modernist theory and practice, signalling the death of the avant-garde as such. I aim to consider this as a view of Stein's work in particular, examining the extent to which her work represents a resistance to this process, and how far it presents a different relationship between art and life than the one that "killed" Modernism.
